Further exploring the regions of China, Stephanie Hemelryk Donald, Professor of Chinese Media Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia, will discuss the pedagogic art of Xu Weixin.. This stems from current research undertaken by Prof Donald and Prof Harriet Evans, and funded by the Australian Research Council. Its aims are to examine the ways in which visual traces from the Cultural Revolution (roughly 1966–1968 and the 1969–1976) inform. current practice in arts and media, and to analyse these images in the light of the opinions held by people with direct memories of the period. Preliminary interviews suggest that there are diverse responses to this traumatic but complex time, and that art and media works must therefore be understood as partial rather than absolute testimonies. Xu Weixin attempts to create a pedagogical, yet monumental archive in paint. What are the roles of mimesis in his work, and to what degree may we understand these paintings as fragments of dialogue across generations, or a soliloquy?
